In our rapidly evolving digital landscape and with the challenges the world faces, it's not just about leveraging technology, it's about using technology for good. Enliven's groundbreaking platform is a testament to this - driving diversity, equity, and inclusion through immersive empathy training and redefining the role of technology in shaping inclusive workplaces.

Executive Vice President and President

We had always thought that virtual reality would become a transportation system for our senses, but now we realize that it is transportation for our hearts as well. This has been demonstrated conclusively by Enliven's growing portfolio of empathy-experiences that could only be delivered using immersive computing. Now I am excited about the next step for Enliven to show the world that VR is also the 'training wheels' for the heart. And I want to help!

Professor & Grandfather of Virtual Reality

Enliven's VR and gaming tech fosters empathy by immersing users in others' experiences with discrimination, bias, or trauma. This is vital for building compassion and equity in society. As a D&I expert, I've seen Enliven's transformative impact and highly recommend it to business leaders prioritizing inclusivity and safety. It can help you achieve these goals.

Case Study: Implementing VR to Combat Workplace Bullying within the Dutch Police Force

Introduction: Since 2021, the Dutch Police Force and Academy have been pioneering users of Enliven's VR content platform, incorporating modules on Mild Intellectual Disability and Domestic Violence into their training programs. This case study explores the extension of this partnership to address Workplace Bullying through immersive VR experiences, highlighting the profound impact on awareness, empathy, and action within the force. Challenge: Workplace bullying remains a pervasive issue, often hidden beneath the surface yet significantly impacting morale and mental health. Recognizing the need for a more effective approach to address and prevent such behavior, the Dutch Police Force sought innovative methods to enhance their DE&I initiatives. Solution: Enliven provided its off-the-shelf VR experience focused on Workplace Bullying, designed to immerse participants in scenarios that simulate real-life experiences of bullying. The sessions are provided by Dutch Police personnel who champion each topic, guide participants on using VR technology, and facilitate the introduction and post-experience discussion to ensure an impactful, enlightening experience. The virtual environment created scenarios where participants, represented by avatars, encounter various forms of bullying, from being ignored and belittled to outright exclusion by colleagues. Outcomes:

  1. Heightened Empathy: Participants report a significant increase in empathy, particularly those who had personally experienced bullying or witnessed it from a new perspective.
  2. Awareness and Discussion: The VR experience acts as a catalyst for profound discussions about bullying. Participants share personal stories, revealing both past and recent experiences of bullying within the force. This openness fosters a sense of community and mutual support.
  3. Acknowledgment of the Issue: The Police for Everyone initiative, aimed at tackling workplace bullying, finds the VR session to be a critical tool in acknowledging the ongoing issue, emphasizing its often unseen impacts.
  4. Safe Environment for Sharing: The post-experience discussion is proven to be invaluable, creating a safe space for participants to share and listen to each other's experiences, thereby taking an important step towards healing and prevention.
  5. Catalyst for Change: The case study demonstrates the VR session's role in initiating a movement towards transparency and real conversations about bullying, laying the groundwork for a culture shift within the Dutch Police Force.
Conclusion: The use of Enliven's VR platform by the Dutch Police Force underscores the potential of immersive technology to tackle complex issues like workplace bullying. By facilitating genuine understanding and discussions, VR has proven to be essential in the police's broader DE&I strategy, moving towards a workplace where everyone feels valued, safe, and included. This case study exemplifies how technology and empathy can combine to effect meaningful change, setting a precedent for other organizations to follow.Read more here

Case Study: Enhancing Judicial Empathy for Individuals with Mild Intellectual Disabilities through VR

Introduction: The Openbaar Ministerie (Public Prosecution Service) in the Netherlands, in collaboration with the Centrum voor Criminaliteitspreventie en Veiligheid (CCV), embarked on a groundbreaking initiative to introduce a VR-based training program aimed at enhancing the understanding and empathy of judicial officers towards individuals with mild intellectual disabilities (MID). Challenge: In the complex landscape of the legal system, individuals with MID often find themselves at a significant disadvantage, struggling to comprehend proceedings and articulate their circumstances effectively. With a notable percentage of suspects in the criminal justice system presenting with MID, there emerged a critical need to adapt the judicial approach to ensure fairness and comprehension for all involved. Solution: A VR experience was developed to simulate the world from the perspective of someone with MID, confronting users with challenges in communication, comprehension, and navigation within a governmental setting. This immersive training became mandatory for officers in training, providing them with firsthand insight into the frustrations and misunderstandings that can arise for individuals with MID within the judicial process. Outcomes:

  1. Increased Empathy and Awareness: Judicial officers reported a significant increase in empathy and understanding for individuals with MID, acknowledging their often overlooked challenges.
  2. Adapted Communication Strategies: The training prompted a shift in how officers communicate with suspects or witnesses with MID, emphasizing clarity, patience, and verification of understanding.
  3. Policy Implications: The experience has sparked discussions on adapting courtroom procedures and interactions to be more inclusive and accessible for individuals with MID, suggesting introductions of all parties and simplification of legal jargon.
  4. Preventive Approach to Recidivism: Understanding the link between MID, misunderstanding of legal processes, and recidivism, the program aligns with the 'Straf met Zorg' initiative to reduce repeat offenses by addressing the root causes of criminal behavior.
Conclusion: The VR training program represents a significant step forward in the Dutch legal system's efforts to accommodate the needs of individuals with MID. By fostering empathy and adjusting judicial practices, the program aims to ensure fairer treatment and prevent misunderstandings that could lead to unjust outcomes. This case study exemplifies the potential of VR technology as a tool for social justice, offering a replicable model for legal systems worldwide.Read more here

Case Study: "Forget Me Not" - A VR Success in Partner Violence Training

Introduction: "Vergeet Mij Niet" (Forget Me Not), Enliven's first VR experience, has been identified as an effective component of the BORG (Beindig Onderling Relationeel Geweld - End Mutual Relational Violence) training for perpetrators of partner violence. This innovative VR experience, which simulates a domestic argument from the perspective of a 7-year-old child, adds significant value to the training program. Challenge: Addressing partner violence effectively requires not only the cessation of harmful behaviors but also a profound understanding and empathy toward the victims. Traditional training methods often fell short in fostering this deep empathetic connection, especially for participants struggling with self-reflection and empathy. Solution: The VR simulation places participants in the shoes of a young child witnessing a parental dispute, complete with the background sound of a crying baby sister. This immersive experience is designed to evoke a wide range of emotions, ultimately leading to increased empathy towards the child and the partner (mother). Outcomes: According to research conducted by the Dutch Probation Service, and the Ministry of Justice and Security:

  1. Enhanced Empathy: Participants reported a significant increase in empathy and a willingness to be vulnerable and reflective about their behavior post-simulation.
  2. Improved Self-Reflection: The VR experience enabled better understanding and consideration of their children's feelings and the detrimental impacts of violence.
  3. Actionable Insights: Significantly, 80% of participants reported a newfound determination to stop a threatening or already-started quarrel in the presence of children, attributing this change to a more profound understanding of how such conflicts can impact young witnesses.
Conclusion: The "Vergeet Mij Niet" VR project within the BORG training framework represents a significant advancement in addressing partner violence. By leveraging VR technology to foster empathy and self-reflection, the program offers a promising approach to reducing domestic violence and supporting behavioral change among perpetrators. Publication: The findings of the "Vergeet Mij Niet" study were published in the legal professional journal, PROCES, marking an important contribution to the field and highlighting the potential of VR in criminal justice and rehabilitation settings.Read more here
