Festo’s VR Automation Training and Eye Tracking Analysis

Project Objective: The goal was to simulate the workings of automation machines with a dual focus: training users in VR and Mixed Reality (MR) environments, and collecting eye-tracking data for in-depth analysis.

Challenge and Solution: Festo needed a solution that not only accurately simulated their automation machines but also allowed trainees to interact with and modify machine settings in real-time, seeing the direct impact of their actions. Another critical requirement was the collection of eye-tracking data for analysis via the iMotions platform.

Leveraging Blender for retopology and UV mapping, and Unity combined with Meta Integration SDK, our team developed an immersive VR experience. This solution supported hand tracking, gestures for teleportation, and direct touch interactions with virtual UIs. A unique integration was created for the Quest Pro device to gather eye-tracking data, which was previously unsupported by the iMotions platform.

Results: The VR application has been a resounding success in Festo’s training programs. Trainees can now simulate the workings of the automation system in a risk-free environment, understanding the consequences of different settings and operations. This hands-on approach has revolutionized training, offering a more interactive and effective learning experience.

Innovations and Technologies: This project is a showcase of several technological feats. It features Meta’s Hand Tracking and Direct Touch technologies, a seamless transition between passthrough and full VR mode, and a custom-developed integration for eye tracking data analysis with iMotions. The implementation of these cutting-edge technologies has set a new standard in VR training and data analysis.
