Machine Familiarization

Device Compatibility: Meta Quest, PICO

Learning about new machinery in a loud, hazardous industrial setting can be challenging. Futurus’ Machine Familiarization VR training solution provides a highly immersive experience designed for new hires and experienced employees looking to familiarize or refamiliarize themselves with job equipment. The app features realistic 3D animations and reference photos to help employees fully understand and interact with various components and functions of complex machinery.

The full version of the app includes multiplayer functionality, allowing trainees to participate together. A companion trainer tablet app gives instructors control over the virtual environment, enabling them to manipulate machinery components and guide the simulation in real time. The trainer can also view the first-person perspective of each trainee, providing valuable feedback and ensuring a more interactive training session.

The app supports both guided and unguided modes, allowing trainers to lead structured sessions or grant trainees the freedom to explore and learn independently. This flexibility makes Machine Familiarization a powerful tool for personalized learning paths and group instruction.

Use Cases

Large Manufacturing Client

A large manufacturing client wanted to transform the way they developed safety training. New hires understood the concept of proper safety procedures but were not always aware of the dire consequences that could occur as a result of a potential missed step. With VR their new hires are able to virtually enter an experience that cannot be replicated safely in the real world.

We worked together to develop new hire training that was able to simulate a bad or “severe incident” in a safe environment. VR training has allowed this client to connect the dots around the “why” behind safety practices in manufacturing environments. New hires are able to experience what it is like to witness a bad day in a safe and immersive environment so they make better choices on the job.

JLG Industries

JLG wanted to provide access to their customers to visualize machines so they could choose the right product for the job. They also wanted to give easy access to technical publications and operating information and owners and operators. We worked with JLG to produce an augmented reality application that supports over 200 products to help fleet manager, technicians, and operators on the job.

To reach a global audience, the app has been released around the world for iOS and Android devices. The app supports 20 languages to allow individuals to learn more about safety decals or perform an inspection in their preferred language. JLG AR was recognized in Fast Company’s Innovation by Design awards and Best Technology Enhancement of the Year by RER Magazine.

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta is in the process of building a new 70-acre campus in Atlanta to provide highly specialized pediatric care to more patients than ever before. The Foundation needed a unique way to excite corporations, private donors, other foundations, as well as the general public. The Foundation has traditionally relied upon architectural dioramas and visual renderings to secure donations, but they took this one step further by recreating the entire campus in virtual reality with Futurus.

The experience features 25 hotspots so donors can see both interior and exterior points of interest on the campus. It even includes fun interactivity like a functional basketball court and hidden therapy dogs around the facility. By leveraging the virtual reality experience as a fundraising tool, they are close to reaching their $1 billion goal.

Testimonials

“When my Plant Director put on the headset and his mouth dropped, that was all I needed… Our trainees were amazed at how realistic the machine looked in virtual reality compared to the machine on the floor. They were naming parts of the machine and remembering what they were because of how immersed they were in that environment.”
