Liminal VR
Liminal is a platform of short virtual reality experiences to empower people to choose how they feel and perform.
It comprises six arenas (Calm, Energy, Relief, Awe, Sleep and Focus) and a VR testing hub called the Liminal Lab. Each arena houses its own library of experiences.
There are currently over 120 experiences on the Liminal Platform which are informed by the research and development of an in-house team of neuroscientists and psychologists and over 1.5m psychometric data points evaluating individual experiences.
Experiences are grounded in evidence-based design principles, which include mindfulness, guided meditations, hypnosis, breathing visualizations, interactive experiences and other techniques designed to induce a range of emotional and cognitive states.
Liminal is currently available for download from Meta Quest virtual reality headsets and uniquely positioned among the approximately 500 approved VR apps on the Meta Store. It has maintained a 4.5 star-rating - making it the world’s highest rated single player application in the wellness category.

Liminal Psychometrics
One of the hallmarks of the Liminal Platform is our psychometrics – which are standardized scales designed to obtain self-report data about a user’s emotional or cognitive state. To date, across the entire Liminal Platform, we have achieved over 1.6 million psychometric data points and 500,000 five-star enjoyability ratings.
A range of other clinical/academic evaluations (completed or ongoing) have yielded positive results, including:
- Post Operative Surgery* (Monash University Clinical Trial – see above) – patients after laparoscopic surgery reported less pain than a control group receiving post-operative care after using one of Liminal’s pain relief experiences (Meridian). Monash has reported a trend towards lower heart rate and less opioid usage. 90% patients reported that they would use VR again post-surgery and would recommend it to others.
- Intraoperative Surgery (Georgetown University and Northeastern University) – Researchers (also using Meridian) saw reported reduction in pain while receiving lumbar epidural steroid injections. 75% of participants said they would prefer to use VR in future procedures.
- RMIT University Sleep Study* – one of Liminal’s sleep experiences (Waves of Tranquility) has seen participants fall asleep on average 11.74 minutes earlier than when reading alone.
- Pain Matrix Clinical Outpatient Pilot – Dr Jacquelyn Nash, a pain management specialist, piloted one of Liminal’s pain relief experiences (Cosmic Conductor) among 28 chronic pain sufferers, who reported a 26% reduction in pain, a 39% reduction in anxiety and average enjoyment rating of 8.8 out of 10.

Liminal Platform in Schools
Over the past 6 years, Liminal have partnered with Wellbeing in Schools Australia (WISA), an Australian focused not-for-profit with whom we have piloted two large scale rollouts of the Liminal Platform in over 40 Australian schools.
Evaluation results have seen students, staff and school counselors/psychologists report positive effects on their mental health and wellbeing. Schools have reported that the Liminal Platform is a valuable promotion, prevention, and early intervention tool to help students improve their mood, reduce anxiety and cope with stress.
They have also reported the Liminal Platform helping vulnerable, disengaged and disruptive students stay in class and build their resilience.
Evaluation results from the most recent pilot (funded by the Australian Government Department of Education across 32 schools) has found that:
- 91% of students reported a positive impact on their mental health and that the Liminal Platform
- 75% of students reported reduced stress and anxiety.
- 100% of school counselors reported it improved students mood and wanted to keep using it.
- 86% of teachers stated it had an extremely positive impact on their own mental health.
Liminal Platform in Workplaces
Serco Asia-Pacific piloted Liminal experiences in a range of call centers who have found that poor customer behavior represents significant psychological risk for their staff. Staff were encouraged to use Liminal experiences each time they experienced distressing calls.
In an internal publication, they reported the results as follows:
“Over four weeks, the teams participated in over 100 VR sessions, capturing complex psychometric data and feedback. The results were overwhelmingly positive. We found an overall 42% increase in positive emotions and 30% reduction in negative emotions following the use of the headset.
Following the initial trial, we have been introducing the VR headsets to other contact center sites, which has been welcomed by our frontline teams. At one site, for example, use of the VR headset has been integrated into the daily schedule for Complaint Handling Team Members.”
According to Anthony Bourke, Performance Optimisation Lead, Serco Citizen Services:
“For agents who have a challenging or distressing call, we have found it provides a great mental ‘reset’ that allows them to continue with their work day, where before they may have had to go home for the day or taken a negative mindset into the next call.”
The pilot was awarded a Global Serco Pulse award in the innovation category and resulted in significant uptake within a range of operational areas within Serco.
Liminal Platform in Hospitals
A recent feasibility study conducted by Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (Department of Anaesthetics and Pain Management Centre) was conducted into the use of the Liminal Platform among patients who had been hospitalized with chronic pain.
Across 486 user sessions, the pilot found demonstrable improvements in mood and anxiety and a reduction in reported levels of pain.
Pre- and post-psychometric testing found a 29.7% increase in patients reporting calm or relaxed after using experiences in the Calm experiences, a 16% increase in patients reporting being cheerful or excited after using Energy experiences, and a 11.7% reduction in reported pain.
Clinicians within the hospital reported that the headsets were very popular among patients and in high demand. Due to the success of the feasibility study, the hospital has since expanded on the pilot and the clinic is adapting the program into clinical use.
Patient feedback included:
- “I have been using it as my sleeping tool. I have tries to stop using it for a week and found it is hard to sleep”
– Female patient (de-identified), 53 years old. - “I slept through most of the night since using it, it’s changed, before almost every night I would wake up in midnight in pain…I don’t really need to take another pain killer [after this], I just do some breathing exercises again, and it makes me more cheerful.”
– Male patient (de-identified), 61 years old.
Testimonials
“Wow! I am not the person to regularly meditate as effects are always short-lived for me, and it’s difficult for me to unwind and let stress go. With work stress at its peak since I stepped into my new and extremely busy Chief Operations Officer role of a large organization. I did enter a hypnotic state that was very palpable with deep relaxation and maintained awareness of everything with hyperfocus. I’m relaxed in meetings, have more confidence, whatever anxiety I had with public speaking is gone, and feel a great sense of peace. Liminal will definitely be a regular tool to keep this busy executive sane. Thank you Liminal team!!”
– Olivia Chubey – Chief Operations Officer at Silvera for Seniors
“Liminal is a brilliant 5 star app. Absolutely incredible content. Being a meditation teacher I recommend this to my clients to enhance their experiences and improve outcomes for ongoing anxiety, trauma and pain management. An extremely effective tool. The responses have been overwhelmingly positive. The sleep experiences are also sensational. Not only are they effective to help you prepare and relax for sleep, I find when I wake in the middle of the night that I can recall the visualization that I experienced before bed and that sends me back to sleep. A great antidote to control the overthinking mind in the middle of the night.Reconditions both mind and body using gentle immersive techniques. Everyone needs a Liminal experience in their life. Highly recommended!”

“Wellbeing in Schools Australia (WISA), is a national Australian not-for-profit organisation with staff having worked in the Wellbeing in education space driving highly successful national government mental health and wellbeing initiatives into Primary and Secondary school settings for close to twenty-five years. WISA has a long-standing partnership with Liminal VR, having piloted the Liminal Platform in over 40 Australian schools utilising Australian and state government grants. This is a virtual reality program developed by Liminal’s team of neuroscientists and psychologists to deliver positive improvements in mood and wellbeing through short and immersive virtual reality experiences. WISA has applied its implementation experience in Australian schools with a very successful uptake of the Liminal platform across the three education sectors for both students and school staff with fantastic mental health, wellbeing and education results.
School leaders, teaching staff, wellbeing coordinators, school psychologists and counsellors have all reported that they have observed that the virtual reality platform has had a highly positive impact on students and on their own mental health and wellbeing. We want to see this ground-breaking program made available in every school. This acknowledges the feedback and advice of students, leaders, teachers, and school counsellors/psychologists who have participated in two major pilots we have conducted with Liminal, and the evidence of benefits in its impact in supporting students and staff mental health and wellbeing, as well as educational outcomes, in schools across the three education sectors in Australia.”
– Jac Van Velsen (CEO of Wellbeing in Schools Australia)
“At Kardinia International College we feel privileged to be part of such a fantastic and progressive initiative. Our students have been excited to try this new technology. We have had lots of positive feedback, with students saying that they feel better after using the VR machine. In some instances we can clearly see a physical change in their expression and body language after using the VR machine, which is fantastic to see.”
– Jade Preedy, Wellbeing Officer – Kardinia International College
